Meditate on Luke 10:1-12
1After this the Lord appointed seventy-twoothers and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place where he was about to go. 2He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.3Go! I am sending you out like lambs among wolves.4Do not take a purse or bag or sandals; and do not greet anyone on the road.
5 “When you enter a house, first say, ‘Peace to this house.’6If someone who promotes peace is there, your peace will rest on them; if not, it will return to you.7Stay there, eating and drinking whatever they give you, for the worker deserves his wages. Do not move around from house to house.
8 “When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is offered to you.9Heal the sick who are there and tell them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’10But when you enter a town and are not welcomed, go into its streets and say,11‘Even the dust of your town we wipe from our feet as a warning to you. Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.’12I tell you, it will be more bearable on that day for Sodom than for that town.
Prayer Prompt
In Luke 9 and 10 and also in Matthew 10, Jesus sends out his disciples. (the 12 and then the 72) Before he sends them out he gives them some very specific instructions. Jesus tells them he is sending them out like lambs among wolves and to take no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals and to greet no one on the road! But then, he said to say “Peace be to this house” and that if a son of peace (or a person of peace) is there, that their peace will rest on him. Jesus told the disciples that they should stay there with that person in their house, heal the sick and tell them the Kingdom of God has come near them. So, what does this mean for cross cultural Kingdom workers in 2024? We think that these principles still apply to us today. As we enter new communities and new places, we want to bring the peace of Jesus with us. Jesus is saying here that people of peace recognize other people of peace. As we live out loud (Shema) and speak peace over people, we believe Holy Spirit-prepared people will identify themselves to us and invite us in.
