Prayer for Aceh

Asking God to do what only He can do in Aceh

Prayer Fuel

Day 26-Thursday April 4th-The Melayu Singkil people

Meditate on Psalm 67:1-7

1May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face shine on us— 2so that your ways may be known on earth, your salvation among all nations. 3May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. 4May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples with equity and guide the nations of the earth. 5May the peoples praise you, God; may all the peoples praise you. 6The land yields its harvest; God, our God, blesses us. 7May God bless us still, so that all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Prayer Prompt

The Melayu Singkil live in the southwestern most corner of Aceh along  the coast as well as the Banyak Islands just off the west coast of the Sumatran mainland. They are bordered to the north by the Singkil Wetlands which serves to isolate them in many ways from their Acehnese neighbors to the north. Like many rural coastland areas of Indonesia, most of the Melayu Singkil are fishermen and divers. The fishermen catch a large variety of fish in the warm tropical waters dotted with dozens of islands. Some of the fish make their way into popular local dishes while other fish are exported while still alive to expensive international markets like Singapore and Hong Kong. The divers catch a wide variety of lobster and sea cucumbers, almost all of which are exported. People here live at an island pace, never getting in too much of a hurry. This leaves ample time to discuss everything from religion, to politics, to the latest soccer match. Since they are almost 100% Muslim, the religious conversations center around Islam.
